About Kinondo Kwetu

Welcome to Kinondo Kwetu
- The only hotel on a stretch of private white beach on Galu Beach.

“This is where we live. It is our home on the Indian Ocean. And it will be yours, too, for as many days as you choose. That is why we call it A Home Away From Home. Kinondo Kwetu is a small, all-inclusive luxury resort owned and operated by us, a Swedish family. But beyond the accommodations, food, and amenities you would expect, it also offers another kind of luxury. We are talking about the luxury of peace and quiet. Of freedom and rest. No pumping music at the pools. No noise from crowds at the bar. No jostling for space on the beach. No roaming trinket sellers. Kinondo Kwetu is a home, not an entertainment centre. We think you will love it as much as we do.” (Ida & Filip Andersson – Swedish owners*)

Kinondo Kwetu is situated on the south coast of Kenya, 1 ½ hours ride south from Mombasa, on the beach of the Indian Ocean. With room for no more than 38 guests, you will always find your own private spot at Kinondo Kwetu, which makes it a very special hideaway for honeymooners. It is also the perfect place to gather family or friends for a private celebration or wedding. With two kitchens in separate buildings, the place can easily be divided into two, making it possible for companies of 10-20 or 30-40 to stay for themselves. It is also the ideal spot for corporate retreats.

Accommodation

Every room and cottage has its own personalized character, as it is furnished and decorated with Swahili culture handicraft and antiquities. Rooms are equipped with king size beds, fans and mosquito nets.

There are plenty of quiet, beautiful spots where you can retire to spend time with yourself or in company, in the library or in one of the living rooms. Or outside, in one of the water towers, where you can watch the sun set over the mountains, on a cliff by the sea or in any of the secluded spots you find in the area.

Dining

Your three-course lunch is taken on the beach, in the soothing shade of trees or in our boathouse by the sea. Your dinner may be served under a clear moonlit sky or in the water tower. At Kinondo Kwetu, there is no fixed dining area. To serve your dinners, we take advantage of the many different charming spots in the garden, on the beach or in the houses. We have a set three-course menu for lunch and dinner. A key ingredient is local fish, caught each morning by Kinondo village fishermen, using traditional methods. Local vegetables and meat is sourced daily to create fresh and flavorful dishes.

Kinondo Kwetu’s bartenders specialize in preparing healthy, fresh tropical drinks. Kinondo Kwetu’s wine list proposes a selection of South African vintages.

Responsible Tourism

Kinondo Kwetu owes much of its charm to its surrounding community and the Kinondo village, from where many among the staff are recruited. To have a respectful interaction with the community is of great importance for us and for our guests. That is why we have established Kinondo Kwetu Trust fund, whose main purposes are to provide health care to the villagers and to support the education of children. The fund sponsors and administers sponsoring of school fees in secondary school. The fund is at present establishing a computer-training center with the aim to educate children and adults.

Kinondo Kwetu Clinic started its operation in November 2008. It offers basic healthcare at a very low cost, a cost that is waived for those who cannot afford it. Since it started, the clinic has been recognized for its good work for HIV and TB patients, as well as for its laboratory.

Newsletter Kinondo Kwetu Trust Fund – October 2011

* Kinondo Kwetu is home to Ida and Filip Andersson, a Swedish family related to safari maven, Baron Blixen. Ida and Filip abandoned their hip city lifestyle and careers in New York, after a Christmas spent helping Filip’s father to renovate his hideaway beside the Indian Ocean.  Unable to resist their beautiful surroundings, they decided to stay on and it changed their lives forever.  They live here with their daughters, Lova and Filippa, surrounded by their horses and dogs, welcoming guests into their haven and focusing a large part of their work on social responsibility, improving conditions for local people.
