Travel Facts & Essentials – The Maldives
Every journey begins with a few practical details – and travelling to the Maldives is no exception. From visa requirements and transfer options to customs regulations and seasonal nuances, this guide gathers everything you need to know before you travel.
Our aim is to keep it simple, accurate, and current. So you can focus on what matters most – the anticipation of arrival.
Entry Requirements
Visa-free stay up to 30 days. Travellers must hold a valid passport (min. one month beyond departure), a return ticket and confirmed resort booking.
Transfers Overview
Resorts are reached via seaplane, yacht or domestic flight. Your itinerary determines the best option, coordinated with our local partners.
Seaplane Transfers
Operate during daylight hours only. Schedules are confirmed the night before. 20 kg checked + 5 kg hand baggage allowance. Private charters available.
Domestic Transfers
For resorts located further from Malé, transfers are arranged via domestic flight followed by a short speedboat ride. Flights operate regularly throughout the day, and schedules are aligned with international arrivals whenever possible.
Speedboat Transfers
Available for islands within close reach of Malé. Operate day and night depending on distance and weather. Most resorts arrange private or shared transfers directly upon arrival.
Customs & Arrival
Duty-free allowance includes limited quantities of alcohol, tobacco, and perfume. Import of alcohol, pork products, and religious materials is prohibited. Your resort representative will meet you upon exit from arrivals and assist with transfer check-in.
Departure Notes
International check-in at Malé Airport opens three hours prior to departure. Seaplane and domestic transfers are scheduled accordingly. Resort teams assist with timing and luggage coordination.
Weather & Temperature
Currency & Tipping
The local currency is the Maldivian rufiyaa (MVR), but credit cards are widely accepted across the resorts. Carrying a few small USD or MVR notes is useful for tips and local markets.
Island Time
The Maldives follow GMT+5, though many resorts run on their own “island time” – usually an hour ahead – to make the most of daylight.
